The 2014 Iditarod season: pt. 3

Unalakleet.

An unexpected overnight in Unalakleet had me wandering between brightly colored houses, cruising the frozen sea break and ice fishing with an old man named Alfred.

The feel of this village is simply described as ‘northern’. Bright and colourful in buildings and character.

It contains the classic clash of old meets new: A myriad of dirt paths winding through the village with one paved road running the perimeter; A fisherman with a 20 year old seal skin hat with earphones sewn into the ear flaps.

The easy friendliness of children chasing after a bunch of newbies in the bed of a truck, and sled dogs barking from their lots out behind each house. Toothless laughter, ATVs, fishing nets and crab pots stacked beside each shack. Not to mention the glowing sunsets over the glassy sea ice.

It’s safe to say that I loved this place, mostly because it felt a lot like home.
