it really was my fault. i shouldn't have set the dogs up on their leads so close to my tent. and i really should have gone back to check on them when it started to drizzle rain instead of thinking that they would hunker down under the trees and ride it out. and i most definitely should have returned to the campsite to touch base with them when the thunder started ringing through the sky. but i was busy working with the bats, trying to process all of our evening captures before the sky opened up and released its downpour.
and so it wasn't all that big of a surprise when i returned to the tents at the end of the night to find niko, still on his lead, curled up on my sleeping bag. the sleeping bag that i had half hazardly thrown into a heap on the floor of my fully zipped tent.
and because, like i said, it really was my fault, i couldn't really be mad at him. so instead, i unhooked his lead, zipped up the inner portion of the torn tent flap, and snuggled down into my wet sleeping bag with niko curled up beside me.
