(winter) sea kayaking chronicles no. 3: The heart of passage canal


When winter refuses to come to the mountains, we head to the sea! 

A day trip out of Whittier, paddling down the middle of passage canal on glass-like water, reflecting snowcapped mountains without a soul in sight. During the summer season, kayakers must hug the shoreline for fear of motorized fishing boats and cruise ships overlooking all small vessels as they speed past every hour of every day. Yet, on this bluebird Saturday, we had the place to ourselves and enjoyed sharing our peace and quite with a local seal and a few sea otters who seemed happy for the company.

The plan was to wait until spring to get my very own sea kayak, but if this is what 'winter' is going to look like, perhaps it's time for me to start trolling craigslist. As much as I love winter and backcountry touring, I've stopped complaining about the lack of snow and given myself over to the 'spring'. As you can tell from the photos, it's not all that bad...
