anyone who knew me as a treeplanting foreman, knew of my bad luck with trucks. or perhaps it was a bit of my lead foot combined bad luck, but regardless, mix those two ingredients with back country logging roads and the results were broken truck after broken truck. dead batteries, busted transmissions, shattered back windows while the back seat was full of planters, you name it, it happened to me and my truck.
but the trend this summer of flat tire after flat tire is relatively new. julain was joking last night that if there had been a tire changing competition along side the hatchet throwing during the aboriginal day games, i would have taken home the prize for sure.
flat tire #1 came from something sharp in the bottom of one of the massive mud puddles i had been cruising through all day during my first week down here. no fault of the road or myself as speed was needed to make it through the puddle, so it was just a byproduct of the job.
flat tire #2 however, i take complete responsibility for. i saw the sharp tire puncturing stick jutting out from a rut in the dirt road i was cruising down but my lead foot had taken me to a speed which was impossible to reduce in time to stop or swerve, so it wasn't surprising when i rolled my window down a few minutes later and heard the familiar sound of hssssssssssssss coming from the rear left tire.
flat tire #3 however, i take no responsibility for and blame it purely on my bad truck luck. i had just picked my truck up in town after an evening of kayaking on the slave river and was headed to the office to grab my batting stuff for a night of work. i pulled up infront of the locked gate, and when i got out to open the lock i heard that all too regular sound of hssssssssssssss. when i looked at my front tire, there was the most innocent little key sticking straight out from the rubber. the chances of driving over a tiny lock key, having it sticking straight up and actually hit in just the right place so that is imbeds itself into the tire, i think is pretty rare. so kudos to the little key with big aspiration, but it means i'm off to the tire repair shop yet again. third time in two and a half months. yes, they know me well.
