playful bats

it really is amazing to sit down and watch bats 'play'. sure there is a good portion of the night where they are out foraging for their evening meal in order to grow their fetus, feed their pup, or put on fat for hibernation, but there is a short ten minute period just before they re-enter their roost for the day that they appear to 'play'. they dip and swerve and play follow-the-leader as well as tag and chase. there's a playful air to it and while i fully recognize my infused anthropomorphism in this observation, it really does seem like they are playing before settling in after a good night's feed. who says bats are all business and can't have a little fun each night too...
